Programme 2016

The Summer School will follow the various stages of the migrants’ experience – departure, journey, reception and integration – through a deep analysis of relevant topics that provide a thorough overview of the phenomenon.

The Summer School will be held at Centro Interculturale Zonarelli, Via Giovanni Antonio Sacco, 14, 40127 Bologna (15 minutes by foot far from the Central Railway Station).

11th July 2016 – The departure from the Country of Origin

Morning session
OPENING SESSION
Presentation of the Summer School and its promoters and partners. Presentation of participants.
European Union Decision Making in Migration Policy: the EU and the member states strategies to cut asylum seeker entries, reduce irregular migration and enhance border control.
History and geopolitics of forced migration toward Europe: the transformations over the last two decades of migration patterns
Afternoon session
Pre-departure projects in the Countries of origin: the IOM experience
Migration and Development: international migration and its impact on economic growth, poverty and inequality in sending countries.
Project Arena: the attendees will have the chance to present and share related projects (10 min.) and then answer questions from the audience (5 min.)

12th July 2016 – The journey

Morning session
Uncertain borders: analysis of European policies of externalization of borders and their consequences
Maritime International Law and Search and Rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea
Afternoon session
Forced migration on Balkan route including life-threatening risks, networks of traffickers and denied access to EU territory: an outlook on recent history
Asylum seekers as a skilled resource: analysis of competences and education levels acquired in the countries of origin
Project Arena: the attendees will have the chance to present and share related projects (10 min.) and then answer questions from the audience (5 min.)

13th July 2016 – The reception

Morning session
European legal regulations on migration: analysis of practical application of European regulations in key EU countries
Sea shore landing: before, during and after the arrival. Legal, medical and social framework.
Afternoon session
Field visit at CAS (Emergency Reception Centre)
Case studies, meeting with coordinators and social workers involved and guided visit
Debriefing session: sharing and discussing the field visit

14th July 2016 – The reception

Morning session
Reception and the politics of protection in the European Union: comparing legislations, modalities and structures
Technical Therapeutic Assistance to refugees and asylum seekers: ethno psychiatry and intercultural psychology among cases of trauma, the integration process and support to social workers
Afternoon session
Field visit at CAS (Emergency Reception Centre)
Case studies, meeting with coordinators and social workers involved and guided visit
Debriefing session: sharing and discussing the field visit

15th July 2016 – The integration

Morning session
Asylum seekers’ presence and integration in Europe: a social-statistical analysis
Unaccompanied Minors’ reception: shelter management, specific needs assessments, health assessments, family tracing, local integration
Afternoon session
Communication and migration: European approaches to asylum narratives and best practices
Journalistic ethics applied to visual communication on forced migration
Evaluation

16th July 2016 – Final conference

Public final conference
Public final session with partners and stakeholders.
